Côte d'Ivoire - Installation of Photovoltaic Generators in Abidjan
The "New Deal for Energy in Africa", launched by the African Development Bank, aims to make energy universally accessible by 2025. A progressive shift to low-carbon energy systems including renewable energies is planned in order to guarantee a green growth. The possibility of installing photovoltaic generators on the bank's site is explored within the framework of the introduction of renewable energy systems.
The Consultant's role is to perform the feasibility study for the installation of solar panels on the bank´s building and to prepare the technical methodology for the procurement of such works.

The mission's objective for the Consultant is to evaluate the feasibility for the construction of photovoltaic generators both in technical and administrative terms:
- Site analysis (visit the identified zones and electrical installations of the bank's building, identification of the shaded areas, evaluation of technical and architectural constraints, etc.);

Guinea - Analysis of Electricity Supply solutions in the region of Boke
MASDAR is developing various projects in the Caribbean and other regions of the world and sourced experts to support the engineering and project management team. These support tasks are contracted separately in the form of so-called Work Orders (WO).
The Guinea Alumina Company (GAC) currently plans to extract about 15 million tons bauxite per year and to install approximately 30 MW of power capacity. The government and other key stakeholders are keen to develop power supply solutions for both the mining sector and the civil / private sector. In light of this, the present study defines the demand and potential power supply options for mining activities and for the surrounding communities.
The overall objectives of this assignment were to:
- Prepare a demand study on the power requirements for the short, medium and long term in the regions impacted by GAC´s activities.
- Develop options, incorporating both renewable energy and existing (and new) fossil fuel based generation for meeting the determined power requirements.

The Power Sector Roadmap and Coordination Activity is one of the components of the Electricity Sector Reform Project of the Sierra Leone Threshold Programme funded by the US Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation. The Project objective is to support the Government’s efforts in the energy sector as well as advance the power sector reform agenda currently under implementation, and improve the effectiveness and viability of service provision through proper coordination.

Mauritania - Construction of Solar Hybrid Systems with 16.6 MW Solar Capacity
MASDAR is developing various small and large-scale solar and wind projects in the Pacific and other regions of the world and sourced a pool of experts to support the engineering and project management team. These support tasks are contracted separately in the form of so-called Work Orders (WO). They include feasibility studies, conceptual designs, preparation of tender documents, evaluation of bids and on- and off-site project management.
Under the current work order, all together eight hybrid systems in the range up to several MW per site and with at total solar capacity of 16.6 MW (range from 1 to 3.4 MW) will be implemented under an EPC approach. Each power plant consists of solar PV, controller, and diesel generator.

Nigeria - Grid-Connected Solar Power Plant (Feasibility Study & Pre-Feasibility Studies)
In its Roadmap for Power Sector Reforms (2013), Nigeria has articulated its commitment to accelerate economic growth while reducing its GHG emissions, i.a. by introducing renewables to the energy mix. The present project shall contribute to this goal. It includes the following main tasks:
- an in-depth feasibility study including power system integration studies for the development of a 50 MW solar plant at a single site in the State of Bauchi, allowing for modular scale-up and phased development, intended to lead to an investment bid;
- a pre-feasibility study on possible cogeneration feeder plants (20-50 MW) adjacent to existing and upcoming hydropower plants (e.g. Shiro-ro, Jebba, Kainji), grid-connected, centralized and/or distributed, in-tended to lead to functional bids;
- a pre-feasibility study on possible embedded generation plants within privatised DISCOs, grid-connected or distributed, intended to lead to functional bids;
- the preparation of tender documents for EPC;
- a training and capacity building programme.

Eritrea - Solar PV Mini-Grids for two Rural Towns and Surrounding Villages
Eritrea’s energy supply system is characterized by massive dependence on traditional biomass fuels to cover its domestic energy requirements, a lack of easy access by the majority of the country’s population to modern energy; and total reliance on imported oil as a source of modern energy. Less than 10% of Eritreans in rural areas have access to electricity. Therefore, an effort by the Ministry of Energy and Mines and international donor organizations is made to promote rural electrification through sustainable sources.
The present project included the design and tendering of two mini-grid PV systems in Areza and Maidma (total 2.25MWp PV), designed as hybrid plants with storage units (3.4 MWh Li-Ion Battery), and diesel gen-sets (5 gensets; total 1.3 MVA). The renewable energy fraction of the system is higher than 70%. The local distribution grid was designed and tendered by Eritrea Electric Corporation and the generation side was handled by intec.

Nigeria - Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Investments in Nigeria through Financial Institutions (Particularly Solar PV)
The project was part of IFC's program in Nigeria for solar market development and finance. One of its major components was to provide technical support (and possibly financial instruments) to local financial institutions and help them develop a business line catering to the emerging solar market in Nigeria.
As part of the start-up activities of this program, IFC commissioned this study to assess the market conditions and demand of energy efficiency (EE) and small renewable energy (RE) financing in general and off-grid solar technology financing in particular, among Nigerian corporates and SMEs.

India - Pre-feasibility Study on Land-Neutral Photovoltaic
This pre-feasibility study examined the economic viability of distributed power generation from solar PV. Given the scarcity of land in a densely populated country such as India, it focused on canal-topped or floating solar panel arrays in the states of Kerala and Maharashtra.

01.2014 - 08.2016Nigeria - Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Investments in Nigeria through Financial Institutions (Particularly Solar PV)
The project was part of IFC's program in Nigeria for solar market development and finance. One of its major components was to provide technical support (and possibly financial instruments) to local financial institutions and help them develop a business line catering to the emerging solar market in Nigeria.
As part of the start-up activities of this program, IFC commissioned this study to assess the market conditions and demand of energy efficiency (EE) and small renewable energy (RE) financing in general and off-grid solar technology financing in particular, among Nigerian corporates and SMEs.

- Preparation of an overview market report on EE / small RE and solar PV market conditions in Nigeria
- Survey of corporates / SMEs to assess companies' EE practices and appetite for EE / small RE / solar PV in-vestments, their interest in external financing, and any real or perceived risks from their perspectives
- Supply chain survey to assess the technical and financial capacities of the EE / RE / solar equipment (100 kW to 5 MW) supply chain participants in the country
- Interviews and consultations with local financial institutions to understand their perspective and position to-wards financing EE / RE / solar projects and Nigerian corporates and SMEs, and the local financing institutions' needs for support from international financing institutions.
- Participation in final dissemination workshops in Lagos and Abuja.

02.2016 - 08.2016India - Pre-feasibility Study on Land-Neutral Photovoltaic
This pre-feasibility study examined the economic viability of distributed power generation from solar PV. Given the scarcity of land in a densely populated country such as India, it focused on canal-topped or floating solar panel arrays in the states of Kerala and Maharashtra.

General overview and evaluation of the concepts of canal-topped and floating solar PV:
- Technical aspects and requirements (modules, framework structures, statics, technical restrictions from canal maintenance, expected output, climatic effects, impact on the water body, grid connection, safety and access),
- Cost-based comparison of system configurations and economic analysis of generation costs,
- Identification and evaluation of social, environmental and climate aspects,
- Lessons learnt from similar projects, inter alia in Gujarat,
- Comparison of concepts and recommendation,
- Establishment of a criteria checklist for selecting future projects.
Development of a project pipeline in Kerala:
- Identification of up to 10 projects with an accumulated capacity of 200 MW or more
- Evaluation and comparison of these sites according to the checklist, possibilities for extension on adjoining land, identification of power off-takers, establishment of rough time frames for implementation, proposal of indicators for measuring the project's success incl. performance data to be achieved
- Brief overview of relevant institutions and expertise in India: policy at national and state level, situation and perspectives of the electricity sector in Kerala, overview of the partner institution KIIDC (Kerala Irrigation In-frastructure Development Corporation) and its capacities for planning, building and operating such projects, identification of other relevant institutions, overview of companies that have installed or are operating canal-topped or floating PV systems.
